When to Renew Your Business Energy Contract: Understanding the Renewal Window
Business energy contracts don't work like most other commercial agreements — you don't wait until the current one ends to start negotiating the next. UK commercial energy policy allows businesses to secure a forward contract up to 12 months ahead of their current contract's end date, and using that window well is one of the simplest ways to control long-term energy costs.
The reason this window exists is straightforward: wholesale gas and electricity prices move constantly, driven by weather, global demand, and supply conditions. Locking in a rate 12 months out gives a business the ability to fix a price during a favourable period in the market, rather than being forced to accept whatever rate is available in the narrow window right before the current contract expires.
That said, earlier isn't automatically better. Locking in at the very start of the 12-month window means betting that today's market conditions won't improve — if wholesale prices are trending downward, waiting a few months for a clearer picture before committing can pay off. There's no single "correct" time inside the window; it depends on where the wholesale market sits when your renewal conversation starts.
What matters more than picking the theoretically perfect month is avoiding the one genuinely costly mistake: letting the window close entirely and lapsing onto a deemed rate. Once a contract expires without a renewal in place, the supplier moves the business onto its standard out-of-contract rate — typically well above what a negotiated fixed tariff would have cost. There's no benefit to waiting until the last possible moment; the only outcome of missing the window is a worse rate, not a better one.
A practical rule most brokers work to: start the renewal conversation somewhere between 3 and 9 months before the current contract ends. That leaves enough runway to properly compare the market across multiple suppliers, without locking in so early that short-term market movement is wasted. If you don't know your exact contract end date, it's on your latest bill or available from your current supplier directly — worth checking now rather than waiting for a renewal reminder to arrive.
